Recommended PDAs w / barcode scanner

Postby lnicoara on Fri Aug 08, 2008 11:11 am

We are looking at upgrading our PDAs (iPAQs hx2700) with a ruggedized model that has a built-in barcode scanner. We're considering the Symbol MC50 and the PPT8800. We would like a model with a good barcode reader that can scan labels in dimly lit areas too. We are currently running Syclo Work Manager on them and transmitting via 802.11b. Are there any recommended models that you guys like?

I love this topic and have a very strong opinion as well as quite a bit of experience with various makes and models.

I highly recommend that you look into models by Intermec, Honeywell (formerly HHP) and Motorola (formerly Symbol). There are even more than that though.

I prefer the models from Honeywell (the HHP Dolphin series) as they are very rugged, ergonomical, have great configurability software built in and the local representation is very attentive to supporting us in the use of their products.

Please share more details regarding the version of Syclo MMWM and what OS you desire on the handheld device.

BTW, were you in attendance at the PANMU conference held here at SeaTac a couple months ago?

I found out about this group a few weeks ago. I wish I knew about the PANMU conference. I would have loved to see what other companies are doing.

We are still trying to decide whether or not to remain with Syclo (I think they are on version 6) or go with IBM's new Mobile Maximo as we upgrade from Maximo 5.2 to Maximo 7.1. In either case, I think we're looking for a device that comes with WM5 or WM6 OS.

One thing for sure, we want a device that lets us lock on to just one Wi-Fi network and turn off auto roaming. We have a lot of wifi networks around here, and it's really annoying when our PDAs log on to other networks.

As for the device, we would like a smaller model that techs can carry around comfortably on their belt. The PDA should also have a good barcode reader. Some PDAs are just too big. However, we'd sacrifice size for reliability.

AJ, what model(s) do you have?

It sounds like we should plan to either speak on the phone or meet in person to continue this conversation. Would you be willing to do one or the other?

I went to Motorola's demo in downtown Bellevue yesterday; they had a semi-truck trailer setup with all their gadgets. I was most impressed with the MC70. I think we found our device. I didn't know they come in so many flavors.

I heard about the demo truck, but didn't want to go to Bellevue to see it. ;)
